"You are using telemedicine to help those with sleep disorders cut the cost of diagnosis... Singular Sleep is impressive." - U.S. Congressman Mark Sanford
"My experience with Singular Sleep has been wonderful! They mailed me the sleep apnea study equipment for a one night sleep test right away. When I took the test they contacted me with the sleep study results and then set up a telemedicine appointment to discuss all the details. Dr. Krainin was very kind and explained all the data to me. Whenever I had questions about my CPAP machine I could call or email them and they would respond very quickly. It is so much better to do it this way than going to a sleep clinic and spending the night. I am very, very pleased with the Singular Sleep telemedicine!" - Fran B.
"My experience with Singular Sleep has been great. I would not hesitate to recommend Singular Sleep to my friends." - Larry H.
"After a close relative was diagnosed with sleep apnea, I became concerned that this might be a health issue for me. I turned to Singular Sleep for quick, easy and affordable access to a home sleep apnea test. The process went smoothly and within a few days I had the report of my test confirming moderate sleep apnea. The follow-up online consultation with Dr. Krainin was especially helpful. After reviewing the general health history I had sent him, he explained that several other health issues that were affecting my well-being were related to sleep apnea and that they might become less of a problem once I began treatment for sleep apnea. I would strongly recommend Singular Sleep as a resource for others who are concerned about sleep-related health issues." - Bill S.

The cost of an at home sleep study is $249.

The typical nasal congestion and throat inflammation from a cold or environmental allergies has little bearing on your sleep apnea test results - go ahead and do the sleep study. If you've been diagnosed with something more serious, like pneumonia or lab-test positive influenza, call us at (844) SLP-WELL (757-9355) to discuss the situation.
No, the device senses when you are standing up and automatically excludes this data form the study so this won't be a problem. Please do not take off or stop the test if you do get up during the night.

CPAP machines, humidifiers and masks are considered "legacy" medical equipment and require a valid prescription from a qualified health care professional. If you test positive for sleep apnea and want to get a CPAP machine, then you will have two options:
Our physician, Dr. Krainin, treats the majority of patients with an auto-CPAP machine or auto-BPAP machine. This prevents you from having to have a titration study. Auto-adjusting machines do require follow-up appointments to verify the effectiveness of the treatment and adjust the machine settings as needed. Some patients with more complex forms of sleep apnea may be required to go to a sleep lab for a full-night sleep study.
There are several CPAP alternatives for sleep apnea. Depending on the type and degree of sleep apnea, you may be a candidate for other treatments such as BiPAP, oral appliances for sleep apnea, Provent, positional therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
Home sleep tests (HSTs) are equivalent to in-lab sleep tests for the purposes of diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients who are at increased risk for the disorder. Diagnosing OSA is by far the most common reason to have a sleep study. In-home sleep studies cannot diagnose other sleep disorders besides sleep apnea. It is advisable that patients with certain medical problems such as advanced heart failure and lung disorders have an in-lab study. Consult your doctor or a sleep specialist if you need advice on what type of sleep study is best for your situation.
Many people have reported that they can't sleep well in the sleep lab. This is actually to be expected. There is a phenomenon called "the first night effect" that leads us to not sleep normally in a new environment. Not only do people find it harder to fall and stay asleep in a different environment, but the normal sleep stage pattern may be disrupted. For this reason, there are strong reasons to believe that home sleep test results might actually be more accurate in many cases.
Common obstructive sleep apnea symptoms, signs, and risk factors include:
Other, more subtle signs may indicate OSA, such as:
These factors may also influence sleep apnea risk:
Additionally, there are many medical problems that can cause sleep apnea.

The equipment used is vastly different. In-lab sleep studies involve electrodes and sensors being applied to your body with abrasive past from your scalp to your legs. There will be a technician observing your during the entirety of the study through an infrared camera in the sleep study room. Our home sleep test units only have three parts:
The "brain" of the unit weighs 3 oz and sits on the chest belt. It records body position and all the data from the other sensors.
Additionally, in-lab sleep studies:
Singular Sleep uses Philips Respironics Alice NightOne home sleep apnea testing devices.

As depicted below, obstructive sleep apea is caused by the back of your throat being too narrow and closing up repetitively during the night:
OSA can cause or worsen numerous medical problems, reducing the quality and length of your life. Sleep apnea can cause:

The sleep study will tell you your apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). If your AHI is five or above, then you have sleep apnea. The report will tell you your AHI in different body positions - often sleep apnea is positional and worse when sleeping on the back.
Your AHI will determine the degree of sleep apnea that you have:
The sleep study report will also tell you about your oxygen levels including:
At the end of the report, the doctor will give you a diagnosis. The most common diagnoses are:
Finally, the sleep study report will give you treatment recommendations, which may include a CPAP machine or BPAP machine, and/or CPAP alternatives such as Provent Sleep Apnea Therapy or an oral appliance for sleep apnea.
Generally our medical director recommends that, before pursuing treatment for sleep apnea, it's a good idea to have had a sleep apnea test in the past five years. This is because sleep apnea severity typically gets worse with age. A new sleep apnea test also is indicated if you've had major weight changes, either a gain or loss, since your original sleep apnea test. It's important to know the degree of sleep apnea severity because it will influence which sleep apnea treatment options might be appropriate for you.
At home sleep apnea test kits are not approved for pediatric patients 18 years old.
Yes, but the person who orders the home sleep test device will be responsible for ensuring the kit is returned on time to Singular Sleep.
The instructions included in the home sleep test kit tell you how to get the machine to tell you in the morning if a good study was obtained. If you have any question about whether you had a good sleep study, please call us at (844) SLP-WELL (757-9355) before returning the test kit so that we can troubleshoot the issue with you.
If you return the home sleep apnea test kit and the sleep apnea doctor determines that there is not enough data to get you a diagnosis, then you will have the option to redo the study with a $30 shipping and handling charge.
To diagnose sleep apnea, a sleep apnea test is required.
In general, the most accurate sleep study data will be obtained if the night of the sleep study is a typical night for you. We typically recommend that, if you take sleeping pills to sleep, then you do so the night of your sleep study. If you have further questions you can schedule an online sleep doctor appointment.
Polysomnogram (or polysomnography) is the formal medical name for a sleep study. A home sleep apnea test is a type of sleep study.
MSLTs and MWTs must be performed in a sleep lab under supervision.
Sleep apnea terminology can get confusing. When people say "sleep apnea machine" they may be referring to a CPAP (the machine that treats sleep apnea) or the testing kit that is used to diagnose sleep apnea. The first step is to see if you have sleep apnea with a sleep apnea test. Then, if your sleep study does indeed show sleep apnea, you will need to get a prescription from a doctor for a CPAP machine to treat the disorder.
The $249 fee is for a two-night rental of the home sleep study kit. The home sleep apnea test unit is a very expensive piece of medical equipment.
No, you can use your sleep apnea test report to get a prescription for treatment from your doctor or our doctor. Either way, you can get your equipment from the durable medical equipment company of your choice.
Advantages of buying CPAP from us include:
Yes, you may have heard some people call home sleep study test kits "sleep apnea testers." "Sleep apnea tester" is just another term for a sleep apnea test kit.
Yes, using your bite guard will not affect the sleep study results.
Yes, the home sleep apnea test device that we use is appropriate to determine if you have sleep apnea and, if so, whether you are a good candidate for an oral appliance for sleep apnea.
Yes, having a home sleep apnea test while using your oral appliance for sleep apnea will let you know how well the device is working to treat your sleep apnea.
If you have a Philips Respironics CPAP machine, then it will be easy to do a "home titration sleep study" to check on the efficacy of your CPAP machine. If you have another brand of CPAP machine, then it is not ideal to do a home sleep test to check the machine's effectiveness.
Yes! We now have special sensors that will work with our home sleep testing system that allow us to assess how effective the Provent Sleep Apnea Therapy is treating your sleep apnea. You would need to make a note of this on your sleep test order so that our team knows to include the special equipment with your test.
Absolutely, if your goal is to get a portable miniCPAP machine, you can use our sleep apnea testing solution.
